Ghent is in Flanders, the Dutch-speaking area of the Low Countries. The main campus is not far out of Ghent city centre. Ghent city centre is navigable on foot and by bike, and the university encourages students to use these modes to get around. There is also a good tram and bus network. The two main international airports in Belgium are Brussels and Charleroi airports. Ghent and the rest of Belgium are well connected by train. International coaches and buses also go to Ghent, stopping near the train station.

The university rents out rooms, studios and flats to international students, although it strongly recommends that those who plan to stay in Ghent for at least a year find private rental accommodation. Places in the university halls of residence are limited. UGent provides help to students in finding private rental accommodation. The cost of an apartment is around £430 a month, although rooms cost less.
